A double pump small enough to clip to your waistband

The Ameda Mya Joy breast pump weighs about 8 oz, runs on four AA batteries or the wall adapter, and clips on so you can move while you pump.

Ameda built it for daily pumping, including the days you’re back at work.

Is the Ameda Mya Joy breast pump right for you?

Best for

  • Moms who want to walk around while pumping, with the pump on a waistband and a pumping bra on
  • Pumping where you can’t count on an outlet: AA batteries run it cord-free
  • A small diaper bag or purse with no room for a tabletop pump
  • Moms who used an Ameda HygieniKit in the hospital, since the flanges, bottles and tubing carry over

Maybe not for

  • Moms who’d rather recharge than buy batteries. The Spectra S1 Plus has a battery built in.
  • Carrying the pump to work every day? The Mya Joy with tote is the same pump with Ameda’s bag.

Batteries or the wall, your call

Four AA batteries give about 1.5 hours of pumping, Ameda’s manual says, so a few sessions away from home need no cord.

When they run low, the screen shows “Lo”. At home, take the batteries out and plug in the adapter that comes in the box.

The AA batteries aren’t on Ameda’s box list, and they’re not rechargeable in the pump.

Two modes, set with three buttons

Stimulation, 6 levels
Fast, light pulls that copy your baby’s first sucks and start milk flowing.
Expression, 12 levels
Slower, deeper pulls once milk flows. The pump switches on its own after 2 minutes.
Backlit screen and timer
Read your level and minutes in a dark room.
Shuts off at 45 minutes
Doze off mid-session and it stops by itself.

The HygieniKit keeps milk out of the tubing

Closed system
A barrier stops milk backing up into the tubing. Ameda calls it the only FDA-cleared pump kit that helps protect milk from contaminants. Open or closed?
Less to wash
The tubing and adapter caps never touch milk, so they skip the sink after each session.
Dishwasher friendly
Flanges and bottles can go on the top rack, Ameda’s manual says.
Single or double
Pump one side or both at once with the same kit.

Two flange sizes in the box, more if you need them

The Mya Joy comes with CustomFit flanges in 25 and 28.5 mm. Ameda makes 12 sizes in all, from 11 to 36 mm, sold separately.

A good fit means your nipple moves freely in the tunnel without rubbing. Our hands-free pumping guide covers pumping bras that hold the flanges for you.

Mya Joy on its own, with the tote, or the Spectra S1 Plus?

The two Mya Joy listings are the same pump. The Spectra S1 Plus trades the AA batteries for a battery that recharges.

Questions moms ask about the Ameda Mya Joy

How much does the Ameda Mya Joy Basic cost with insurance?

With insurance, the Ameda Mya Joy Basic is $0 out of pocket on the plans we work with. Check your coverage and we’ll tell you your exact cost before you order.

How strong is the Ameda Mya Joy suction?

Up to 250 mmHg in Expression mode, Ameda says, and up to 100 mmHg in Stimulation. The Spectra S1 and S2 list 270 mmHg, so the Mya Joy is gentler on paper. It has 6 Stimulation levels and 12 Expression levels.

How do I put the Ameda Mya Joy together?

Ameda’s manual says to start with dry parts: 1. Push the valve onto the bottom of the flange, holding it by the rim. 2. Press the diaphragm into the top of the flange, with its inside completely dry. 3. Screw on the bottle. 4. Press the adapter cap onto the flange until it pops. 5. Keep the tubing attached to the caps and tubing adapter.

How do I clean the Ameda Mya Joy?

Wash the flange, diaphragm, valve and bottle after every use, in a basin used only for baby items or in the dishwasher. The tubing, adapter cap and tubing adapter never touch milk, so they need no washing. Ameda says to sanitize before first use by boiling or in a microwave steam bag, and never to push a brush into the valves.

Where do I buy replacement parts for the Ameda Mya Joy?

Ameda sells them on its website and through online and medical supply partners including Amazon. Ameda recommends replacing valves and diaphragms about every 8 to 12 weeks, depending on how you clean and use them. Call us if you’re not sure which part you need.

How long do the batteries last in the Ameda Mya Joy?

About 1.5 hours of pumping on four fresh AA batteries, Ameda’s manual says, and the type of battery changes that. The batteries are not rechargeable, and the screen shows “Lo” when they run low. There’s no built-in battery; plug in the adapter whenever you’re near an outlet.

Which flange size fits the Ameda Mya Joy?

It comes with 25 mm and 28.5 mm CustomFit flanges, and Ameda sells sizes from 11 to 36 mm separately. A good fit means your nipple moves freely in the tunnel; rubbing means too small, and areola pulled in means too large. Call us and we’ll help you find your size.

How loud is the Ameda Mya Joy?

45 dB or less, Ameda says. That’s quiet enough for an office or a car.

Is the Ameda Mya Joy hospital grade?

Ameda calls the Mya Joy “hospital strength” and files it under its single-user pumps, not its hospital-grade ones. We don’t use the label ourselves. The number to compare is suction: 250 mmHg in Expression mode.

Can I use the Ameda Mya Joy lying down?

Ameda doesn’t publish guidance on pumping lying down or reclined. It does say the pump clips to a waistband and works hands free with a pumping bra. Check the manual or call us if you want to pump in bed.

Can I use the HygieniKit from the hospital?

Mostly, yes. Ameda says the CustomFit flanges, bottles, lids and tubing from an Ameda hospital kit all work with the Mya Joy. Use the valves and diaphragms that come with the Mya Joy, since those differ.

Should I pick the Ameda Mya Joy or the Spectra S1 Plus?

The Mya Joy weighs about 8 oz, clips to your waistband and runs on AA batteries or the wall. The Spectra S1 Plus lists 270 mmHg, runs about 3 hours on a built-in rechargeable battery and weighs about 3 lbs. Pick the Mya Joy for the lightest carry, the S1 Plus for stronger suction and no batteries to buy. The Mya Joy with tote is the same pump plus a bag.

Does insurance cover the Ameda Mya Joy?

Ameda says most insurance plans cover the Mya Joy. We check your plan and send the prescription request to your doctor, and we’ll tell you before anything ships if your plan covers a different pump. Start your order through insurance.

Can I get an Ameda pump through insurance?

Most health plans, including Marketplace plans, must cover a breast pump under federal rules (HealthCare.gov). We check your plan, get the prescription from your doctor, and ship the Mya Joy to your door. If your plan covers a different pump, we will tell you before anything ships.
